Coates founded CIL to develop his many patents, the most noteworthy being the Coates Spherical Rotary Valve (CSRV). The CSRV is designed to replace the century-old technology of the internal combustion engine's camshaft and poppet valve system. An engine equipped with the CSRV can run on different fuels while reducing emissions and increasing efficiency; the need for maintenance is also reduced. CIL licenses its CSRV engine technology to makers of heavy-duty vehicles, automobiles, and industrial engines. Major customer Almont Energy (Canada) took first delivery of CSRV engines in 2010.
