Company Description

Fortune tellers might look at your palm, but Chiron got more information from your blood. As part of Novartis' Vaccines and Diagnostics unit, Chiron developed nucleic acid testing systems to perform diagnostic screening of blood supplies. Such screening helped prevent the transmission of infections during blood transfusions. Chiron was the first to identify the hepatitis B and C viruses. Its PROCLEIX products were used to screen for such viruses as HIV, West Nile, and hepatitis. PROCLEIX consisted of testing assays, automated processing instruments, and related software. Its products screened more than 80% of the donated blood in the US and were approved for use around the world.
