In addition to coal production and trading, the company also provides coking operations, manufactures coal mining equipment like conveyors and roof supports, and provides design and consulting services to coal miners. Still, the coal operations are by far its largest business, providing nearly three-quarters of total sales. China Coal Energy was formed at the end of 2006 by China's largest coal company, China National Coal Group Corporation. It is the country's #2 coal producer.
