The organization cares for children from birth to adolescence with some 230 beds and is linked to the Detroit Medical Center and Wayne State University. The children's hospital provides a full spectrum of adolescent care including cardiology, critical care, emergency, oncology, rehabilitation, and respiratory services. It also performs research and is one of a handful of hospitals testing new drugs to treat spinal muscular atrophy in youngsters. The hospital, established in 1886, works to make itself kid-friendly by providing its patients with playrooms, activity centers, computer labs, and classrooms.
