A subsidiary of energy colossus Chevron , Chevron Mining operates coal mines in Alabama, New Mexico, and Wyoming; a molybdenum mine in New Mexico; and a rare earth mine in California. Its molybdenum is used in making steel alloys, and the rare earth mine produces lanthanides, which are used in cell phones as well as aerospace and military applications (such as in tiles on the space shuttle). Chevron Mining was created in 2007 when the parent company merged its mining operations (the former Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining and Molycorp ) into one unit; Molycorp joined Chevron when the energy giant acquired Unocal in 2005.
