Imbued with the spirit of Ceres, the Roman goddess of agricultural fertility, Ceres, Inc. is an agricultural biotechnology firm that specializes in developing grasses used for bioenergy feedstock production. Its products, which include seeds to grow switchgrass, sweet and high-biomass sorghum, and miscanthus, have the potential as biomass feedstock to generate electric power and produce fuels like celluosic ethanol, butanol, and jet fuel. Ceres boasts that its grasses can be used with existing agricultural technologies and are suitable for cultivation on marginal crop land. (It claims its crops consume water and nitrogen more efficiently than corn and soybean crops.) Founded in 1996, Ceres filed an IPO in 2011.
