Company Description

It's oil in a day's work for the folks at Catlettsburg Refining. The company, a subsidiary of Marathon Petroleum, operates the 212,000-barrel-per-day refinery in Catlettsburg, Kentucky. The refinery, which sits on a more than 650-acre site, produces nearly 2% of the gasoline made in the US. The refinery, which processes both sweet and sour crude oils supplied primarily by pipeline, is a major producer of asphalt, diesel, jet fuel, petrochemicals, propane, and lube oils. Ashland Refining Company acquired the 1,000-barrel-per-day plant on the edge of the Big Sandy River in 1924. In the 1940s it began a major expansion to assist the WWII effort.
