Though it buries its customers, Carriage Services hasn't come close to burying its competition. The firm is a large US death care company, but it trails far behind Service Corporation International and that firm's smaller rivals Stewart Enterprises and StoneMor Partners. Carriage Services runs about 135 funeral homes (owned and leased) and some 30 cemeteries (owned and leased) in about 25 states, but mostly in California, Massachusetts, and Texas. It removes and prepares remains, sells caskets and memorials, provides transportation services, hosts ceremonies, performs burials, and maintains cemetery grounds. Carriage Services was established in 1993. FMR and Zazove Associates each own about 15% of the company. To read the full description, subscribe now.

    Competition

Competitive Landscape for Carriage Services, Inc.
Demand for services is driven mainly by the number of older Americans. The profitability of individual companies depends on sales and marketing and efficient operations, because local demand is relatively fixed. The main advantage of large companies is their ability to share resources (limos and hearses, embalmers, and marketing costs) among clusters of funeral homes. Small operators can compete successfully with national companies because the funeral business is intensely local. The industry is labor-intensive: annual revenue per employee is around $130,000. To read the full description, subscribe now.
