Created in 1911 by Andrew Carnegie (who wrote in his 1889 manifesto The Gospel of Wealth that the rich should share their good fortune), the foundation awards some $100 million in grants annually. It focuses on four areas: education, international peace and security, international development, and strengthening US democracy. Grant recipients include the Johns Hopkins University, University of Cape Town, and Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation. Carnegie's will mandates that grants benefit the US, but about 7% of funds can be used to benefit current and former members of the British Commonwealth.
