Once one of the largest commercial real estate lenders in the US, Capmark Financial real estate is working to get back on the mark. Plummeting real estate values brought on by the recession and an ailing balance sheet forced Capmark Financial to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2009. A few months later, its Capmark Investments unit also filed. The companies emerged from bankruptcy in 2011. After filing for protection Capmark slashed its assets in half by selling business operations, including its loan origination and servicing business. The company continues to operate its commercial real estate investments and funds management business.
