Cano Petroleum had been a "can-do" independent crude oil and natural gas production company. The company (named after 16th century Spanish explorer Juan Sebastian del Cano), focuses on buying undervalued mature properties (primarily in Texas and Oklahoma) that still have development potential. Cano employs enhanced oil recovery operations, including water and chemical flooding, infill drilling, and well recompilations, to increase production on these acquired properties. The company has estimated proved reserves of 49 million barrels of oil equivalent. However, in 2012 the financially troubled company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
