All things being equal, the California State Board of Equalization has a corner on the gold in the Golden State. The board administers the state's tax and fee programs, including sales and usage, property, and special taxes, which together provide about one-third of the state's annual tax revenue. The board-administered monies support state and local government programs and services in corrections and social welfare, hospital and health care, housing, law enforcement, natural resource management, schools and universities, and transportation.
