Through operating subsidiaries Hearthside Homes and Signal Landmark, the company builds homes and develops residential communities in Southern California. Long wrapped up in a battle over land development rights, California Coastal Communities has begun development of its Brightwater project, some 215 acres (about half of which is undevelopable land) situated near important wetlands in Bolsa Chica, the last undeveloped strip of coastal property in Orange County. Besides the controversial parcels, the company has homebuilding operations in Los Angeles County. California Coastal Communities emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2011.
