The South could have used C.W. Matthews Contracting during Sherman's march to the sea. The company provides highway and bridge construction and commercial site work. It also provides asphalt paving and is one of the largest plant-mixed asphalt producers in the Southeast. The group operates about 30 asphalt plants in Georgia and manufactures nearly 6 million tons of hot mix each year. Its projects include the transformation of an old steel plant into Atlantic Station -- a 138-acre mixed-use development in Atlanta. In 1946 C.W. Matthews and several partners founded Marietta Construction Company, which became C.W. Matthews Contracting Company in 1954; today it is led by C.W.'s son, CEO Robert Matthews.
