Unlike other major railroads, CSX Transportation elects not to go west. The company, the primary subsidiary of CSX, provides rail freight transportation over a network of about 21,000 route miles of track in 23 states in the eastern half of the US, the District of Columbia, and two Canadian provinces that serves about 70 ports. It also has track connections to more than 240 short-line and regional railroads. Freight carried by the railroad includes coal, aggregates (sand and gravel), agricultural products, chemicals, food, consumer products, forest products, fertilizer, motor vehicles, and intermodal containers. Sister company CSX Intermodal arranges transportation of containerized freight by road and rail.
