German media giant Bertelsmann owns CDNOW; it and BMG Music Service are subsidiaries of Columbia House, which in turn forms part of the DirectGroup Bertelsmann division. CDNOW's Web site is operated through a partnership with its former archrival, Amazon.com, under which Amazon handles all Web site operations, including inventory management, customer service, and shipping.
