Part of the US Department of the Treasury, the Bureau of the Public Debt is responsible for tracking and reporting public debt (which includes accumulated spending deficits and money borrowed through Treasury securities). The agency also borrows money needed to operate the Federal government by selling and servicing Treasury bills, notes, and bonds, as well as US Savings bonds, amounting to more than $2 trillion a year.
