From Club Fed to high security penitentiaries, the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) has its work cut out for it. The bureau's mission is to protect the public safety by incarcerating federal offenders in facilities that are safe, humane, cost-efficient, and secure, and to provide opportunities for their rehabilitation within the system. Consisting of about 115 institutions (i.e. prisons), six regional offices, two staff training centers, 28 community corrections offices, and its headquarters in Washington, D.C., the BOP is responsible for the custody and care of about 200,000 federal offenders.
