Bristol Farms operates about 15 upscale specialty supermarkets in California's Los Angeles, Orange, and Ventura counties, as well as one store in San Francisco. Smaller than traditional supermarkets (stores average about 14,000 square feet), more than two-thirds of the company's sales come from fresh products. The chain also sells wine and spirits. Once-owned by Los Angeles-based investment firm Oaktree Capital Management, Bristol Farms was sold to grocery giant Albertsons in 2004, but continued to operate independently. Ownership of the specialty foods retailer changed again in mid-2006 following grocery wholesaler and retailer SUPERVALU's acquisition of more than 1,100 stores from ailing Albertsons. To read the full description, subscribe now.

    Competition

    Competitive Landscape for Bristol Farms
Population growth and consumer tastes drive demand. Because margins are low, the profitability of individual companies depends on high volume sales and efficient operations. Large companies can offer a wide selection of products and have advantages in purchasing, distribution, marketing, and finance. Small companies can compete effectively by offering specialty products, serving a local market, or providing superior customer service. Discount stores and warehouse clubs have aggressively pursued the retail grocery market, and Wal-Mart is the largest seller of groceries in the US. Other competition includes specialty food stores, convenience stores, drugstores, dollar stores, and, to some degree, restaurants. To read the full description, subscribe now.
