Brand Matter uses its gray matter to manage and market consumer brands. The brand management and licensing company owns the Ellen Tracy clothing brand, which is targeted toward professional women. (Ellen Tracy struggled under several owners in recent years until it was purchased by Brand Matter from Liz Claiborne in early 2008.) Brand Matter licenses the Caribbean Joe Island Supply Co. lifestyle brand of beach-inspired apparel and accessories, such as sunglasses and luggage. It also advises companies that own brands, including The Bombay Company and Linens n Things, that were once part of now-defunct retail chains. Brand Matter is owned by private equity firms Windsong Brands and Hilco Consumer Capital.
