The company operates under the goal of publishing the essential publication for business executives, its core audience. It also operates a related website, which features blogs, podcasts, and lists and rankings, and publishes content for mobile devices. The print magazine was launched in 1929. In 2009 financial information provider Bloomberg acquired the title from publisher McGraw-Hill, which had owned the magazine for 80 years. The parent company has 2,300 journalists in nearly 150 bureaus across more than 70 countries that it uses to bolster the magazine's content.
