Birmingham-Southern College is a private liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The school offers bachelor's degrees in more than 50 fields of study, as well as master's degrees in public and private management and music. It has an enrollment of approximately 1,400 students from some 30 states and eight countries. During January students participate in a four-week Interim Term, which offers activities such as travel, independent study, research, or internships. Annual tuition is about $26,000, plus books and residence. Birmingham-Southern College is the result of the 1918 merger between Southern University (founded in 1856) and Birmingham College (founded in 1898).
