St. Pete's tourists and residents alike count on Bayfront Health System, operator of the coastal city's Bayfront Medical Center, a not-for-profit hospital housing some 500 acute care beds. Founded in 1906, the medical center provides general medical and surgical care, as well as emergency services, trauma care, and specialist care in areas such as rehabilitation, cancer treatment, and cardiology. The hospital also provides air-medical transport through its Bayflite helicopter program to a 15-county region. In addition to the medical center, Bayfront Health System includes several ancillary facilities, including urgent and primary care clinics and outpatient rehabilitation centers.
