Not content to watch the tide roll away, Bay Microsystems' products are not wastin' any time. The fabless chip maker designs transport processors, programmable devices used in optical networks, that can process data at speeds up to 160Gbps (gigabits per second). Its Chesapeake IC is a 40G network processor and traffic manager. In keeping with the company's name, other network processors are called Biscayne and Montego. Bay Micro also offers ABEx, a transport gateway that supports a number of data networking formats, including ATM, Ethernet, InfiniBand, and Internet protocol. Founded in 2000, the company markets its wares to enterprise, government, and service provider customers for use in metro networks and WANs.
