The nonprofit trust operates one of the world's largest research enterprises, with more than 20,000 scientists, engineers, and staff serving 1,100 corporate and government customers annually. Battelle owns research facilities in the US and Switzerland and manages or co-manages several Department of Energy-sponsored labs, including Brookhaven National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Idaho National Laboratory, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
