Barr Pharmaceuticals is raising the bar and lowering the prices for many medications. The company is one of the world's largest makers of generic drugs, the cheaper knock-offs of off-patent branded pharmaceuticals. Through its Barr Laboratories subsidiary, the firm makes more than 120 generics for the North American market, with an emphasis on oral contraceptives. Barr's PLIVA subsidiary makes and sells more than 1,000 generic drugs, as well as pharmaceutical ingredients, primarily in Germany and Eastern Europe. The company also develops branded drugs through its Duramed unit, including contraceptives such as Seasonique and Plan B.
