This link will open in a new window Although Shakespeare might appreciate the curriculum, Bard College is not named for the Bard of Avon. Founded in 1860 by John Bard, the school grants liberal arts degrees and provides a classical education. Bard's total enrollment of 1,600 includes some 200 graduate students. First-year students are required to take a three-week Workshop in Language and Thinking that emphasizes the connection between expression and thought. Students must also complete a year-long senior project that is reviewed by faculty members. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker of the band Steely Dan both attended Bard (Fagen is an alum; Becker did not graduate) and penned the song "My Old School" as a sardonic tribute to their alma mater.
