The Bank of Italy, known there as the Banca d'Italia, plays a huge role in la vita economica of Italy. Established in 1893, the central bank has authority on fiscal issues ranging from setting monetary policy and interest rates to overseeing the country's banking industry and dealing with antitrust issues. It also helps set monetary policy for the entire Eurozone, in conjunction with the European Central Bank. Along with the Treasury, the Bank of Italy gained praise for orchestrating the changeover from the lira to the euro. The Bank of Italy maintains its head office in Rome, branch offices in Italy's regional and provincial capitals, and in financial centers such as New York, London, and Tokyo.
