The Y-12 National Security Complex (built as part of the Manhattan Project during WWII) makes, dismantles, refurbishes, stores, and manages nuclear weapons and weapon components; removes and secures nuclear material and equipment from foreign sources, and provides fuel for research and Naval reactors; and works with the Department of Defense and Homeland Security on national security projects such as the Future Medical Shelter System and the Vulnerability Assessment Resource Center.
