Formerly known as VT Shipbuilding, the company has designed and built about 300 ships for more than 30 navies, including the Royal Navy, during the past 30 years. It moved its main operations to a 30-plus acre facility in the Portsmouth Naval Base. It constructs military vessels, including corvettes, fast-strike craft, patrol vessels, and mine counter-measure vessels. For the commercial market it builds ferries and super yachts. In 2007 former parent VT Group agreed to merge VT Shipbuilding with BAE SYSTEMS ' shipbuilding operations. The companies formed BVT Surface Fleet Ltd in 2008.
