Ion implantation devices are axial to Axcelis Technologies' business. Semiconductor makers use these implanters to insert ions into silicon wafers to change their conductive properties. Axcelis' other offerings include systems for dry strip, photostabilization, and rapid thermal processing of wafers. Axcelis and Sumitomo Heavy Industries (SHI) were equal owners of SEN Corporation, which Axcelis licensed to manufacture and sell certain implant products in Japan. SHI purchased Axcelis' 50% share in SEN in early 2009, with the two companies sharing cross licenses for patents and technical information.
