Atlas South Sea Pearl (formerly Atlas Pacific) irritates oysters on a daily basis. The firm owns pearling operator PT Cendana Indopearls and has established joint ventures with Indonesian pearl farms to escape the tight regulations placed on Australia's pearl industry. Atlas South Sea Pearl hatches, raises, nucleates (seeds each oyster with an irritating bead) oysters, and harvests white, silver and gold-colored pearls. The company also sells oyster meat and meat by-products and the mother-of-pearl (also called nacre) from its oyster shells. Atlas performs some 480,000 seeding operations per year. Competition
Competitive Landscape for Atlas South Sea Pearl Limited
Jewelry sales depend partly on consumer income. Small jewelers can effectively compete with large chains because price isn't the main factor determining sales. Profitability depends on merchandising and effective marketing. Jewelry is sold not only by specialized jewelry retailers, but also by department stores and mass merchants. Because regular gross margins are very high, often 50 percent, mass merchants have been able to cut prices and take market share. Wal-Mart is the largest jewelry retailer in the US.
