Company Description
Drug company AtheroGenics developed drug candidates for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, including diabetes and coronary heart disease. Its lead candidate, AGI-1067, was an oral drug intended to improve blood sugar levels. Development of the therapeutic compound was ongoing despite disappointing results from a major AGI-1067 clinical trial, which led to the termination of a licensing agreement with AstraZeneca and an organizational restructuring that cut AtheroGenics' workforce in half in 2007. The company's alliance with Astellas Pharma on a second anti-inflammatory candidate, organ transplant drug AGI-1096, also ended. Faced with a lack of funding, in 2008 the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
