Associated Estates Realty no longer prefers to associate itself with affordable housing. The self-administered real estate investment trust (REIT) is in the process of exiting that market to focus on multifamily apartment properties, which it acquires, develops, and operates in eight states. Ohio, Michigan, Georgia, and Florida represent its largest markets. The REIT's portfolio consists of about 70 apartment communities (including more than 15,000 units) that it either wholly owns, manages for third parties, or asset manages.
