Company Description
Antofagasta is one of the world's leading copper miners. Most of its operations are in Chile, where it owns four copper mines -- the Los Pelambres and Esperanza mines (its heavy producers) and El Tesoro and Michilla mines. It produced about 640,500 metric tons of copper and 9,900 metric tons of molybdenum in 2011. The company also produces gold at its Esperanza mine, which yielded 196,800 ounces in 2011. Antofagasta's road and railway operations transport mine output and consumable products in northern Chile. Antofagasta also owns a water distribution company in Chile. Chile's Luksic family controls a majority stake in Antofagasta through the E. Abaroa Foundation, which holds more than 60% of the company.
