AmpliPhi Biosciences (formerly called Targeted Genetics) is amping up the fight against bacterial infections. The drug developer focuses on anti-bacterial (bacteriophage) therapeutics. It was after the 2011 acquisition of Biocontrol that AmpliPhi reorganized itself; going from being focused on developing DNA-based gene therapies to encourage (or sometimes inhibit) the production of proteins associated with disease to its current focus of treatments for antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections. The field for anti-infective treatments is receiving great attention these days with the spread of antibiotic-resistant infections such as the deadly methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus aka MRSA.
