Company Description

AmberWave Systems can't help you with grain, but it does help semiconductor makers. The company, which was founded by MIT scientists in 1998, performs R&D on the properties and applications of strained silicon. AmberWave licenses its patented techniques to chip makers, such as Intel and United Microelectronics, which then employ strained silicon in semiconductors that need higher performance or lower power consumption than ordinary silicon can offer. Silicon wafer manufacturer SUMCO is an AmberWave licensee. In 2008 the company acquired Aonex Technologies, a developer of advanced materials integration technologies. Investors in the firm include Adams Capital Management and ARCH Venture Partners.
