When Altair Nanotechnologies paints the town, its pigment of choice is titanium dioxide (TiO2). The company produces titanium dioxide particles used in paints, coatings, and sensors. Altair intends to create new applications and products with its nanocrystalline technology. Its major development thus far has been its nano lithium-titanate battery materials, which offer superior performance, the company says, to other rechargeable batteries. In 2011, Canon Investment Holdings, through a subsidiary, purchased a 49% share in Altair for $57.5 million. The deal includes the transfer of Altair's lithium-titanate manufacturing process for producing battery cells to Canon's Energy Storage Technology (China) Group.
