One of the largest business development companies in the US, Allied Capital invests mainly in private middle-market enterprises. Targeting such industries as business and financial services, consumer and industrial products, health care, and retail, the company seeks out established businesses that have solid market share and management with significant equity stakes in their firms. The company does not provide early-stage or seed funding. On occasion, Allied Capital may take a controlling equity position in a company, but usually assumes a minority interest and holds on to it long-term.
