Alliance Boots Holdings makes an even bigger footprint in Europe's retail and wholesale drug markets since the UK's #1 drugstore chain, Boots the Chemists (BTC), combined its operations with that of drug wholesaler and retailer Alliance UniChem. Formed by the 2006 merger of the two firms, Alliance Boots Holdings is Europe's leading drug wholesaler, serving more than 140,000 pharmacies, hospitals, and clinics in about 16 countries, including China. The health and beauty group operates more than 3,200 pharmacies in the UK and more than a half a dozen European and Asian countries. US private-equity giant Kohlberg Kravis Roberts took the company private in 2007 in a deal valued at about $22.2 billion.
