Akron General Medical also operates Edwin Shaw Rehab, the area's only hospital specializing in rehabilitation. Edwin Shaw treats patients who have experienced stroke, head trauma, and other critical injuries. It has about 35 beds. Akron General Medical was founded in 1914 as Peoples Hospital.
