Ask anyone at Akeena about their company's name, and they'll tell you Akeena was the mistress of the Greek sun god Apollo. The company (which does business under the Westinghouse Solar name as the result of a 2010 partnership agreement) designs, markets, and sells solar power systems for residential and small commercial customers. Akeena was founded in 2001, and by early 2009 had installed more than 3,000 solar power systems at schools, wineries, restaurants, housing developments, and other locations. However, the company exited the installation business in 2009 to concentrate on manufacturing and distribution. Previously limited to six states, the company now distributes in some 34 states and in Canada.
