Out of Africa or in, Air Nigeria (formerly Nigerian Eagle Airlines and Virgin Nigeria Airways) is the Republic's leading airline and an affiliate of UK giant Virgin Group. The airline offers scheduled passenger service between Lagos and about 15 destinations in Africa, including half a dozen in Nigeria. It operates a fleet of Airbus jets. Nigerian institutional investors own 51% of the company; Virgin Atlantic Airways 49%. Virgin Atlantic is in talks to sell its stake, however, due to a dispute with the Nigerian government over where Air Nigeria should base its domestic operations. Distancing itself from Virgin Atlantic, the carrier changed its name in 2009 and, as part of a financial turnaround, again in 2010.
