Island-hopping Aer Arann provides scheduled passenger transportation service to more than 25 destinations, primarily in Ireland and the UK but also in Northern France. It offers regional flights on behalf of Aer Lingus, too. Most of its flights originate from Cork, Dublin, or Galway. The carrier operates a fleet of about a dozen ATR 72-500 turboprop aircraft, which were chosen in part for their fuel efficiency. Chairman Padraig O'Ceidigh owns a controlling stake in the company, which he acquired in 1994. Aer Arann began operations in 1970 to fly between Galway and the Aran Islands, off Ireland's western coast. In 2010 it filed the Irish equivalent of US Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and emerged in November.
