Company Description

Copper is king for ASARCO. A subsidiary of diversified mining firm Grupo México, ASARCO operates mining and copper smelting activities,  primarily in the Southwestern US. Each year its mines produce around 400 million pounds of copper, as well as silver and gold as by-products of the copper production. It produces copper cathode, rod, and cake. Its three mines and a 720,000 tons/year smelter are located in Arizona. The company also operates a copper refinery with a 279.5 million pounds per year production capacity in Amarillo, Texas. ASARCO exited Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in late 2009 after four years, through Grupo México's plan to retain control of the company. ASARCO was founded in 1899.
