ALDI keeps it cheap so shoppers can, too. How has discount food retailer ALDI Group become one of the world's biggest grocery chains, running about 9,000 stores worldwide? By offering deeply discounted prices on about 1,400 popular food items (a typical grocery store has 30,000). ALDI (short for "Albrecht Discounts") buys cheap land mostly on city outskirts, builds cheap warehouses, employs a tiny staff, and carries mostly private-label items, displaying them on pallets rather than shelves. ALDI has about 1,000 stores in some 30 US states, but Germany (where ALDI has a network of some 4,200 stores) accounts for about two-thirds of sales. Brothers and co-founders Theo and Karl Albrecht own the company. To read the full description, subscribe now.

    Competition

    Competitive Landscape for ALDI Group
Population growth and consumer tastes drive demand. Because margins are low, the profitability of individual companies depends on high volume sales and efficient operations. Large companies can offer a wide selection of products and have advantages in purchasing, distribution, marketing, and finance. Small companies can compete effectively by offering specialty products, serving a local market, or providing superior customer service. Discount stores and warehouse clubs have aggressively pursued the retail grocery market, and Wal-Mart is the largest seller of groceries in the US. Other competition includes specialty food stores, convenience stores, drugstores, dollar stores, and, to some degree, restaurants. To read the full description, subscribe now.
