The gentlemen behind hedge fund Angelo, Gordon are trying a second time to enter the public market. The fund's top executives formed Alexander Mortgage REIT (since renamed AG Mortgage Investment Trust) in 2011 to qualify as a publicly traded real estate investment trust. AG Mortgage will buy residential mortgage-backed securities backed by Ginnie Mae, Fannie Mae, or Freddie Mac. The REIT filed a $300 million initial public offering (IPO) in March 2011 to begin buying assets for the trust. It will be externally managed by AG REIT Management, a newly formed subsidiary of Angelo, Gordon. In 2008 Angelo, Gordon created blank check company Angelo, Gordon Acquisition, which filed a $345 million IPO but never priced.
