Sbarro lends an Italian flavor to that great American innovation, the shopping mall. The company operates and franchises more than 1,100 cafeteria-style Italian-food stands. Serving pizza, pasta entrees, and salads, Sbarro's units are typically found in high-traffic locations, such as malls, airports, and toll-road rest areas. Roughly 500 of the locations are company-owned, while the rest of the chain is operated by franchisees. Sbarro went through a Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization in 2011 and the company filed for protection again in 2014 but exited four months later with plans to revamp its stores and the way it makes pizza.
