E.ON has transformed itself from a regional conglomerate into a multi-utility and a global player with 26 million customers. Its diversified business consists of power generation, natural gas, energy trading, retail and distribution operations. Subsidiary E.ON Energie is one of Germany's top two power companies (running neck and neck with RWE), with some 17 million electricity, gas, and water customers; the unit also has about 69,000 MW of electric generating capacity across Germany and Central Europe.
