The utility, , transmits and distributes electricity to 749,000 customers in central and southern Ohio, including the capital city of Columbus. The utility, a subsidiary of American Electric Power operates almost 5,570 miles of electric transmission and distribution lines and has interests in seven power plants that give it about 3,740 MW of generating capacity. It also sells bulk power to wholesale customers. In 2011 the company merged with and into sister utility Ohio Power to improve AEP's operational efficiency in Ohio.
